The Principles of Passive House

Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010

Dr Feist’s ‘Passive House’ is an internationally established standard for building with very low energy consumption, which has been proven in practice. The Passive House standard is comfortable, sustainable and economically attractive. A Passive House is a building in which thermal comfort can be guaranteed by post-heating or post- cooling the fresh-air mass flow required for a good indoor air quality, providing a savings of 75% in comparison with the current normal building standards in central Europe, and a saving of at least 90% in relation to existing buildings there. A further reduction in the heating energy demand involves high investment costs which cannot be re-financed by the energy savings. However, the demand is already so low that it would be possible to meet the remaining heating requirement using an ordinary light bulb – the heating energy demand is about the same as the heat emitted by persons and devices which are internal heat sources.
