Cyprus Hills Home Improvements

Friday, Oct 30, 2009

Join Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation and Community Environmental Center for Weatherization Day

Learn about our efforts to improve the energy efficiency of homes throughout Cypress Hills and East New York, and find out how to weatherize your own home!

CHLDC has committed itself to weatherizing all 182 of its affordable apartment units, and to incorporating green components into all of its new construction. Green, weatherized housing creates healthier, safer, more affordable living spaces for residents, and helps advance a more sustainable world for us all. Weatherization, including blowing insulation into walls, sealing and/or replacing windows and other possible leaks in a building's "envelope," as well as repairing a building's heating system, reduces the amount of energy needed to heat and cool homes, and reduces heating costs by 32% and overall energy bills by about $350 each year.

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is a federally funded program that enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Through this program, weatherization service providers install energy efficiency measures in the homes of qualifying homeowners free of charge. This year, the federal government has committed a record $5 billion to WAP.
