Teardrop Park Tour

Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Speakers:
Laura Solano, Project Lead and Principal, Cambridge Office of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc.

T. Fleisher, Director of Horticulture, Battery Park City Parks Conservancy

More Details:
The desire to build and operate a sustainable public park influenced every aspect of Teardrop Park's development, from material selection to contractor practices.

Not only is the Battery Park City park layout and program a response to the microclimatic asymmetry created by the buildings and winds off the Hudson; the varied fabricated soils were also meticulously calibrated to create optimum growing conditions. Based on decades-long research into urban soils and non-toxic plant maintenance, environmental aspects of the park's design include fully organic soils and maintenance regimes that don't rely on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Treated and recycled gray-water from the adjacent LEED Gold-rated Solaire Building and stormwater runoff from the site captured in an underground storage pipe supply all of the park's irrigation needs.
